Call for freedom in the area of computing GNU Labs to encourage idea of sharing knowledge MALAPPURAM: The activities of GNU Labs, a free software-based volunteer project, began at the MES College of Engineering, Kuttippuram, on Friday with a day-long workshop. V.H. Abdul Salam, Principal of the college, inaugurated the workshop. Delivering the keynote address, free software proponent P. Madhu made a fervent call for freedom in the area of computing. According to Prof. Madhu, freedom movements in technology are more important in today’s circumstances because restriction or confinement of technology is feared to lead to total domination of certain aspects of human life. “Campuses should promote the culture of freedom movement, especially the one that the Free Software Foundation leads. It is not a movement based on personal egos or an attempt of domination. It’s an attempt to establish equality and care amongst fellow beings,” Prof. Madhu said. GNU Labs encourages the idea of sharing knowledge, supporting the ideals of the Free Software Foundation. It aims at improving the existing work of free software by helping students to complete their curricular project works. Shyam K. and Mahesh M., final year B.Tech students of MES College of Engineering, led the workshop demonstrating relay chat system and other utilities live using free software.
