PANAJI: Concerned by the abysmally low conviction rate in rape cases and increasing number of cases of violence and abuse of women in the State, the State Women’s Commission, Goa (SWC), has decided to set up a monitoring committee to study and monitor such cases. The committee will have representatives from children’s care bodies, non-governmental organisations, police and councillors. It will study and monitor all types of sexual crimes, in particular the rape cases filed this year, and move towards providing legal safeguards for women, Chairperson of SWC Pramod Salgaonkar told The Hindu recently. She said their biggest concern was that the Act to prevent violence and abuse of women was not being implemented effectively. The commission would recommend some amendments to the Act, she added. The commission held a meeting with representatives of some non-governmental organisations on the situation arising out of crimes against women recently where these concerns were voiced by various groups. The commission would take up with the State Government its pending demand that floating casinos be removed from the Mandovi. “If the Government has given permission for offshore casinos, then it should send them offshore,” Ms. Salgaonkar said. She said the recent meeting also expressed concern over the manner in which crime against women in general was reported by some sections of the media “without sensitivity” and “condemned the character assassination of victims.”
