TECHNICAL FAULT: The generator transformer of the KTPS unit 10 which was burnt on Friday.

KOTHAGUDEM: The 10th unit of the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS) was shut down after its transformer caught fire in the early hours of Friday.

As this unit has an installed capacity of 250 MW, the State grid will lose nearly 5 million units a day.

Attributing the fire to an electrical fault, KTPS officials said that the transformer was found engulfed in flames around 3 a.m. with two of its three bushings bursting because of overpressure.

Three fire tenders that rushed to the plant could put out the flames by 3.50 a.m.

The plant authorities said that failure analysis as well as restoration would take a couple of days. They sought the assistance of BHEL authorities, which had manufactured the unit.

Such fires are normally caused by abnormal operating conditions, overvoltage and system short-circuits.

The transformer had been in operation for nearly 11 years and underwent an overhaul just a month ago.
