Nayudamma Award for leather scientist

GUNTUR: Eminent leather technologist and Department of Science and Technology Secretary T. Ramasami will be presented the prestigious Dr. Y. Nayudamma Memorial Award for the year 2008 at Tenali on Saturday.

Founder and managing trustee of Dr.Y. Nayudamma Memorial Trust P. Vishnu Murthy said the award would be presented at NRK Kalyana Kala Sadan at 6 p.m. He would also deliver the 17th memorial lecture on the theme “Towards people-centric innovations: a foresight of Nayudamma.”

Dr. Y. Nayudamma Memorial Trust instituted the award in 1986 to commemorate distinguished scientist and internationally renowned leather technologist Nayudamma. It is annually given to a scientist or technologist in recognition of his or her outstanding contributions to science and technology.

Union Minster of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari will present the award. The scientist holds a Master’s degree in Leather Technology from the University of Madras and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Leeds, UK.

He received Gold Medal and Prizes at both Bachelor’s and Master’s levels from the University of Madras and Coleman Research Prize 1976 for Best Doctoral Thesis from the U.K. He joined the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Chennai, as a scientist in 1984 and served as its Director for more than 10 years before taking over as Secretary, DST, in May 2006.

The CLRI won two major landmark awards, CSIR Special Technology Award 1998, and the Third World Network of Scientific Organization’s Technology Award for outstanding S&T innovations for the Micro Enterprise Sector in Leather, in 1998.

For his outstanding contributions, he has won Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for chemical sciences in 1993 .
