dated December 6, 1958: Future of Berlin

Mr. Duncan Sandys, Minister of Defence, replying to a House of Commons debate on Britain’s European policy, said in London on December 4 that the British Government were “keen” for Western talks with Russia on the Berlin problem. He said, “We on our side are equally keen to go into this question with the Russians and we sincerely trust they will not seek to restrict discussion on the narrow limits of their proposals.” Earlier during the debate, Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, the British Foreign Secretary, had said that the time had come for full discussion with Russia about the problems of Germany and European security after “due consultation” between the Western allies.
