dated December 6, 1958: No promise of tax relief

Addressing the annual general meeting of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of India in Calcutta on December 5, Mr. Morarji Desai, Union Finance Minister, said he could not assure any tax relief to industrialists and businessmen. The expenditure tax, Mr. Desai said, had been misunderstood by the business community. It was meant more to restrict expenditure and was not a source of large revenue.
