Corrections and clarifications

An article “Anarchic capitalism vs. sensible capitalism” (Editorial page, December 4, 2008) said, in the eighth paragraph, that “many pundits find fault with capitalism but fail to recognise that Hindustan Motors, a public sector enterprise, did not change its borrowed technology in Ambassador cars for five decades.” The author Prabhudev Konana clarifies that the line on Hindustan Motors being a public sector enterprise is misleading. It should have been “publicly traded enterprise”. The author was comparing how protectionism and government-backed monopoly of a private enterprise led to no innovation with the Ambassador for almost five decades. In the 1980s, the automobile sector was opened up for competition. Until then, there was no need to innovate.

A sentence in the sixth paragraph of an article “An opportunity to promote a global strategy against terrorism” (Op-Ed, December 4, 2008) was “… An intergovernmental agreement for the construction of four nuclear reactors at the Kudankulam plant in Tamil Nadu, which will be the highlight of Mr. Medvedev’s visit, may help the two countries attain the declared trade target of $10 billion by 1010, but that will still be a tiny fraction of either country’s foreign trade.” It should have been 2010.

With reference to an article “Finland takes to VVER reactors” (“Science & Technology” page, December 4, 2008) the author Mr. K.S. Parthasarathy, former Secretary, AERB, clarifies: “The title of my article gives the wrong impression that the reactor now under construction in Finland is a VVER. The 1,600 MWe reactor now under construction is Framatome ANP’s European Pressurised water Reactor (EPR).This reactor was selected on the consideration of cost. Finland has not chosen VVER technology for all its reactors. Finland’s first two reactors built in 1977 and 1981 were VVERs; the other two reactors (1979 and 1982) are Boiling Water Reactors. For its sixth reactor, it is interested in Russia’s new 1,150 MWe version of the well-proven VVER-1000 (AES-2006) along with Toshiba’s ABWR and GE-Hitachi’s ESBWR.”

The last paragraph of a PTI report “Antony warns of airborne terror threat” (December 4, 2008) said the Ayodhya complex demolition anniversary fell on December 6, leading to queries. Mr. V.S. Chandrasekar, Executive Editor, PTI, clarifies that it should have been the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary.

A BSNL sub-junior chess championship report “Girish, Bharathi in lead” (“Sport”, Karnataka editions, December 4, 2008) incorrectly said that in the girls’ section, Shalmali Gagare of Maharashtra drew with Shikha Shah of Gujarat to take the sole lead. She was placed second behind R. Bharathi of Tamil Nadu, the eventual winner, at the end of 10 rounds.
