Another feather: Gulzar receiving Akshaya award 2008 from Governor Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. BHUBANESWAR: Well-known poet, lyricist and filmmaker Gulzar was conferred the prestigious Akshaya Samman for 2008 by Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare here on Saturday evening. The Samman was presented on the occasion of the 10th annual Akshaya Utsav at Utkal Mandap open air auditorium. The award was instituted last year by Akshaya Mohanty Foundation in memory of the late legendary singer-composer and writer Akshaya Mohanty. The award, which is given to a prominent personality from the field of music or literature every year, carries cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a citation. The presentation of Akshaya Samman was followed by awarding the winners of the State-level Akshaya Sangeet competition. The winners also sang the songs sung or composed or penned by the late legendary singer Akshaya Mohanty. The performance by the winners was followed by dance drama Randipua Ananta set to songs composed by Akshaya Mohanty and directed by popular actor-director Choudhury Bikash Das. A large number of music lovers and admirers the late singer attended the programme. The first Akshaya Samman was conferred on veteran playback singer Manna De.
