Mediation more effective in solving simple disputes: expert

Unnecessary litigations add to unwanted burden on judicial system
Need for causing general awareness among people on the issue stressed

ADILABAD: Professor M. Sridharacharyulu of the NALSAR University, Hyderabad on Saturday opined that mediation was more effective in solving simple issues instead of approaching courts. He said unnecessary litigations added to unwanted burden on the judicial system and such issues should be resolved outside the courts.

He was delivering a talk at the inaugural of the two-day training programme on law related to mediation, conciliation and arbitration organised jointly by the Andhra Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA) and the International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution’s (ICADR) Hyderabad region centre. Interspersing his lecture with examples, the Law professor said issues related to child custody, restitution of conjugal rights and the like should not be brought to courts. He said the cases related to negotiable aspects in money and religious matters among others also formed part of the issues that could be resolved through mediation. He also stressed upon the need for causing general awareness among the people in society so that many minor irritants could be avoided.

Reducing pendency

D. Subramanyam, Member Secretary of the AP High Court Legal Services Committee (APHCLSC) said the Arbitration and Conciliation Act was meant to reduce pendency in courts and speedy dispensation of justice. Adilabad Principal District Judge N. Ravi Shankar, secretary of ICADR, Hyderabad regional centre, K.V. Satyanarayana and secretary, Adilabad District Legal Services Authority, Krishnappa and representatives of Women and Child Welfare Department were among those who attended.
