KOCHI: Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited has successfully devised and implemented a modification in its caprolactam plant by which ammonium sulphate, a major fertilizer, is produced through direct neutralisation in the Lactam plant. These plants are originally put up in such a way that while one tonne of caprolactam is produced, 4.5 tonnes of ammonium sulphate is derived as a co-product. The new development in the caprolactam plant enables FACT to produce ammonium sulphate as a main product without producing caprolactam. Due to the unattractive price of caprolactam that has been prevailing in the global market for quite some time, FACT was forced to stop production of caprolactam, consequent to which production of ammonium sulphate also was affected. Viable moveAs a result of the recent changes in the fertilizer subsidy policy effected by the Union government, ammonium sulphate also has been brought under subsidy scheme which made its production an economically viable proposition. But FACT was not able to resume production of ammonium sulphate because the price of caprolactam being so low, the combined production of caprolactam along with ammonium sulphate would lead to heavy loss, a press release said.
