Nine injured in Assam market blast

Special Correspondent

GUWAHATI: Nine persons, including two children, were injured in a bomb blast at a marketplace near Kheroni village in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Saturday evening. Police suspect the hand of the extremist outfit Karbi Longri N.C. Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) behind the blast.

The condition of one of the injured was stated to be critical.

The blast coincided with the KLNLF’s foundation day. It was the second blast suspected to have been triggered by the KLNLF in the past five days since the indefinite economic blockade called by the outfit began on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the police recovered a live bomb from near the office of the Autonomous State Demand Committee in Diphu town, which was later defused.

The KLNLF had claimed the responsibility for Tuesday’s blast in a passenger train at Diphu railway station that claimed three lives and left 32 injured. The outfit also gunned down two Hindi-speaking persons at Dolamara village of the district.

The Army on the other hand succeeded in motivating eight KLNLF cadres to give up violence and return to the mainstream.

The eight cadres laid down arms and ammunition before General-Officer-Commanding (GOC) 21 Mountain Division, Major General Chander Prakash, at Jagiroad in central Assam’s Morigaon district. The arms included AK-56 rfiles, a 9mm pistol, a .32 revolver, a few grenades, explosives, detonators, ammunition and a hand-held radio set.
