TIRUCHI: The Prisons Department has decided to enhance the vocational skills of inmates lodged in the Special Prison for Women here by imparting them activity-based training in various trades soon. The Women Entrepreneurs’ Association of Tamil Nadu (WEAT) and the Centre for Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University have come forward to organise free training programmes for women prisoners in readymade garments manufacture, desk top publishing, office automation and tally, mushroom processing; manufacture of jute, coir products and sanitary napkins, food-based and banana fibre products. Besides, the WEAT would lend its help in bagging work orders from outside to enable inmates manufacture and supply variety of products. It would also help them in marketing the products. The authorities have written to their higher ups at Chennai seeking permission for installation of necessary machinery required for providing training to inmates in certain trades such as areca nut, jute products and sanitary napkins manufacture. Trainers from the WEAT, who had undergone training from National Jute Service Centre, Kolkata, would shortly train about 80 inmates in two batches on jute products manufacture for a period of one-and-half months, says Dr. N. Manimekalai, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University and also founder of WEAT. Efforts would be taken to provide stipend for those undergoing training in mushrooming processing and coir products, says Ms. Manimekalai.
