Karachi phone call warns of threat to Bangalore

M.T. Shiva Kumar

BANGALORE: The State administration on Saturday went into a huddle following a call on Saturday evening that reportedly warned of a terrorist attack on Bangalore similar to the one in Mumbai.

Highly placed sources told The Hindu that the Israeli consulate in Mumbai received a call from Karachi, warning of the attack on Sunday.

The caller did not mention any specific Bangalore locales. The Mumbai police immediately alerted their Bangalore counterparts, and a high-level meeting in the Vidhana Soudha was attended by Minister in charge of Bangalore R. Ashok, Home and Transport Secretary Upendra Tripathy, Director-General and Inspector-General of Police R. Sri Kumar and several other officials

Mr. Sri Kumar said that the entire State had been put on red alert and all steps had been taken to ensure public safety. Security at public buildings and vital installations has been stepped up and naka bandi intensified.

Security has been tightened at railway stations, bus stands and airports, including BIA.

He said, if needed, the Rapid Action Force (RAF) would be called in to assist the local police. Some police personnel have been told to cancel their leave and report for work.

Mr. Sri Kumar, however, asked people not to panic and lend any credence to rumours.
