Drug ‘test’ ends in death of youth?

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Police are investigating into the shocking death of a 25-year-old man who volunteered for clinical trial of a new drug in a laboratory in Ameerpet on Friday.

Police said K. Surendra of Moulali complained of chest pain before taking the second dose of “Felodipine” drug at the clinical laboratory in Ameerpet and died under mysterious circumstances. Though Surendra was immediately rushed to a corporate hospital in Banjara Hills, he died hours later while undergoing treatment there. The drug was being tested in the laboratory for controlling blood pressure.

Police said Surendra was administered the first dose of 10 mg tablet on November 26 and was kept under observation for some days. The laboratory officials declared him fit after testing his blood samples and released him with a direction to appear for the second test dose on Friday.

According to the police, Surendra went to the lab around noontime on Friday. However, while waiting in the first floor there, he complained of chest pain and was rushed to the hospital. “We sent viscera contents for chemical analysis in the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and exact cause of the death will be known only after the FSL report is ready,” said Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar Sub-Inspector B. Tirupati Reddy. Autopsy was conducted on Surendra’s body in Gandhi hospital mortuary and the body handed over to the family.
