740 TMMK members held

MADURAI: The Babri Masjid demolition anniversary passed off peacefully on Saturday in Madurai city and its peripheries.

The police said that 740 persons, including 40 women, belonging to the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam were arrested in front of the railway station when they attempted to block trains. Earlier, they assembled near the Kattabomman statue and staged a demonstration urging the Centre to build the mosque at the same place where it was demolished 16 years ago.

A senior police officer said that elaborate bandobust arrangements at sensitive places, including Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, were in place.

There was no untoward incident. Devotees from far and near offered worship at the shrine. They were permitted entry after a thorough frisking.

In the district, police had made elaborate arrangements and ensured that there was no untoward incident.

In view of ‘guru peyarchi,’ the police had deployed adequate personnel, including women police, to regulate crowd at the Chithiraratha Vallabha Perumal Temple at Kuruvithurai near Sholavandan.
