Show of solidarity at IGF

Special Correspondent

Speakers condemn terror attacks on Mumbai

Over 1,200 participants from 92 countries participated in the Internet Governance Forum

The next IGF would be held in Egypt in 2009 and Lithuania in 2010

HYDERABAD: It was indeed a show of solidarity. Over 1,200 participants from 92 countries participated in the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) held here for four days from Wednesday that concluded on Saturday.

Markus Kummer, Executive Secretary of the IGF, said that he did not expect that big a number from overseas following the tragedy that struck Mumbai in the form of terrorist attacks.

“Many delegates turned up here only to demonstrate their solidarity with India. I was talking to most participants. This feeling was very much palpable.”

He went on to add, “Almost all participants felt that terrorists shouldn’t be given the victory by staying away from the conference. The Government of India and the State administration made efforts to make utmost security arrangements.”

Excellent hosts

The government and the people of India proved that they were “excellent hosts” by offering “great hospitality” during the last four days to the international delegates. He said that while several international conferences were cancelled, IGF received an overwhelming response, in spite of the attacks.

Resolution

Even foreign delegates and journalists expressed similar feelings. And, almost at every session, the speakers condemned the attacks in unequivocal terms. The IGF placed its resolution condemning the attacks and expressing sympathies to the bereaved families and solidarity with India on its official website.

The next IGF would be held in Egypt in 2009 and Lithuania in 2010.
