No need for task force

The suggestion of the Forum for Better Visakha for creating a Task Force to fight any future attack by terrorists in Vizag may not be useful, for, terrorists have to be engaged by anti-terrorist outfits or security outfits like NSG, Anti-Terror Squads (ATS) specially trained in sharp shooting, psychological manoeuvres and other aspects. Further, it is difficult to enter harbour or land with the watchful Coast Guard and Navy intelligence. Terrorists do not target military installations as it will involve heavy loss of life without commensurate gains. They mostly target heritage places and large malls and there is no such place in Vizag. Guarding industrial installations such as refinery and steel plant is the job of CISF personnel in anti-terror combat.

Time for poll reform

The sops being offered by the political parties are so luring and charitable as to offer free rice and other essentials, as if they are gifting their ancestral accumulations. Late NTR often said, “Whose Abba (father)’s property is it to be lavished?” If the leaders want to really serve the poor and get due credit, they may spend their earnings. These political indiscriminate party deals, amalgamations and spewing venom against their own erstwhile friends and ‘big bosses’ is disgraceful and unworthy of their education. Several mentors of India have suggested recall of legislators as and when they are proved unworthy of the voters’ trust. The election code should be revamped, responding to the needs of the present day. Voters’ rolls should be made fool-proof.

Bad roads

Every lane and sub-lane has been dug for underground drainage system in Vizag city. As a result, pedestrians and vehicle drivers are put to inconvenience. We understand there is no coordination between the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and other departments concerned. In spite of so many articles and photographs published frequently in media on the subject, there is no response from the GVMC. After completion of drainage works in lanes, roads can be laid simultaneously to avoid inconvenience to the public. The dynamic GVMC Commissioner may join hands with VUDA in achieving Vizag’s progress on expected lines, making it a model city.

TV moderators lack expertise

A TV moderator is, in fact, a facilitator. His job is not not to oppose or argue or to side with panellists nor is he to sit in judgment on issues under discussion. But the moderators we see on TV channels are rarely up to the mark. Besides lacking the necessary expertise, they set the panellists against each other and in the end simply sum up the views of the participants. Even well-respected moderator like Karan Thapar who interviews the high and the mighty, is seen, at times, prejudiced in his views. No wonder, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, had to quit the studio half-way during an interview.

It is high time the sponsors of TV channels should take care in selection of well-educated and well-informed and well-experienced moderators to conduct interviews.
