NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be undertaking rehabilitation of slum dwellers in its area keeping in view the upcoming 2010 Commonwealth Games as well as directions from the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. The MCD, in its budget, has proposed to rehabilitate dwellers of 35 jhuggi jhonpri clusters. Those residing in the slum clusters on Harish Chandra Mathur Lane have already been rehabilitated. In addition, the Delhi Development Authority and the New Delhi Municipal Council are being approached to provide 133 and 260 plots respectively for rehabilitating the slum dwellers of Aditi Apartments and those on Humayun Road. Joint biometric surveys have also been completed to rehabilitate 13 slum clusters and process of rehabilitation is in progress, according to the MCD. As per the civic body’s present policy, slums dwellers would be rehabilitated on constructed tenements. Construction work at 6,896 residential units at Dwarka, Rohini and Swada Ghevra at a cost of Rs.228 crore has been started. Community halls have also been constructed at Seelampur, Nandnagri and Swada Ghevra for slum dwellers and 400 additional toilet blocks have been provided in various other slum clusters. The civic body has provided a budget estimate of Rs.47.37 crore for its jhuggi jhonpri wing for the financial year 2009-10 against the proposed overall budget of Rs.6,115.93 crore for the MCD general wing for the next fiscal.
