Sonia Gandhi visit: Kerala police on high alert

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Kerala police have gone on a high alert mode after receiving a phone call that threatened an attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi when she arrives in Kochi on December 15.

Ms. Gandhi, who is coming to attend a conference of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, will speak address a public meeting. She will stay in Kochi that day and address the PCC general body meeting the next day to be attended by 5,000 party delegates.

Kollam Superintendent of Police M.R. Ajith Kumar said the anonymous call to his office phone was attended by a constable. A male voice told the constable that he was the representative of a gang that had decided to “eliminate Sonia Gandhi” during her visit.

The call was traced to a country in West Asia. When attempts to call back on that number were made, the response was that of a fax machine.

A top police officer said that even if it was a prank, the police were not taking any chances.

The Central intelligence and security agencies have been informed about the phone call and the number has been passed on to them, the officer said.
