ENTHUSIASM: Children from destitute homes participating in a sack race at the 11th Orphanage Olympics in Mangalore on Sunday. MANGALORE: It was a day out for children from destitute homes in Dakshina Kannada on Sunday when they took part in the 11th annual orphanage Olympics, organised by the Rotary Club of Mangalore Central here. These destitute children did not forget to pay tributes to those who died in the recent Mumbai-terrorist attack before getting on with the sports events. They expressed condolences by lighting candles. Seven teams from different destitute homes in the district participated in various events at the Canara Girls’ High School grounds at Dongarakeri here. The competitions included sack race, tug of war, dodge ball, lemon balance and 100-m and 50-m running races.Each destitute home was given a 50-kg bag of rice, besides sports materials. Ram Adyanthaya, deputy general manager of Vijaya Bank, said that such programmes would help the destitute children in join the mainstream of society. “I want to participate in these games next year too,” a boy from St. Aloysius Boys’ Home, Ullal, said. Another boy from Prashanth Nivas, Jeppu, said that he was participating in these games for the past four years and was proud to be a part of it this year too.
