Srinagar: The Election Commission said it favoured an inquiry into the roughing up of four photo journalists allegedly by security personnel in Sopore constituency of Baramulla district, during the fourth phase of elections on Sunday. Expressing regret at the incident, Chief Electoral Officer B.R. Sharma said, “The Election Commission has taken cognisance of the incident. It is interested in getting the incident probed so that the guilty is punished.” The photo-journalists were allegedly roughed up by police and CRPF personnel while they were covering an anti-poll protest and subsequent lathicharge at Arampora village of Sopore. Mr. Sharma told journalists that all efforts would be made to ensure that such incidents did not recur. AP photographer Mukhtar Khan, who received head injuries, was taken to the Soura Medical Institute. Three others — Tauseef Mustafa of AFP, Fayaz Kabli of Reuters and Habib Naqash of Asian Age — also received minor injuries. They were discharged after first-aid, sources said. — PTI
