Marad remand prisoners register 100 per cent pass

Staff Reporter

Three of the accused clear SSLC equivalent exam

One student scores 75 per cent marks

Fees waived, study materials provided

KOZHIKODE: View it as a case of ‘cent per cent’ pass. All the three remand prisoners in the Marad case who appeared for the SSLC equivalent examination have passed, despite odds. One student scored 75 per cent marks.

The prisoners were among the 500 neo-literates from the district who appeared for the Class X equivalent examination conducted by the State Literacy Mission from August 27 to September 3.

Though 10 Marad remand prisoners registered for the examination, the others dropped out, said M.P. Anish, welfare officer at the district jail.

This is the first time that remand prisoners from the jail have appeared for the SSLC equivalent examination.

The Marad Court had directed the jail authorities to make necessary arrangements for the prisoners to appear for the examination at the Government Model Higher Secondary School centre.

Contact classes

The prisoners, below 30 years of age, have been in jail for more than five years. They attended contact classes conducted by teachers from the Devagiri Higher Secondary School, Devagiri College and Palazhi Higher Secondary School and the literacy mission preraks.

The fee of Rs.1,000 to be paid to the State Literacy Mission was waived for them and books and learning materials were provided for free.

The Kozhikode District Jail had turned into a classroom of enthusiastic students.

After a hectic spell of being produced in court on a regular basis, they viewed classroom lectures as a golden opportunity to pursue their studies further, Mr. Anish Kumar said.

Higher studies

The examination conducted by the Literacy Mission qualifies the remand prisoners for admission to the Plus Two course and to appear in Public Service Commission tests.

The classes were conducted systematically as per a time table under the Kozhikode Corporation Literacy Programme.

More than 860 neo-literates had registered this year for the SSLC equivalent examination conducted by the Literacy Mission, showing a growing tendency among neo-literates to improve their educational qualifications for greater social mobility and more employment opportunities.

In all, 283 females and 217 males appeared for the examination.
