VIJAYAWADA: The results of elections in upcountry States were a clear indication that the people were looking to a national party like the Congress to protect its people from terrorists and global economic crisis, said former Vijayawada Guntur Tenali Mangalagiri – Urban Development Authority (VGTM-UDA) Chairman Malladi Vishnu on Monday. Addressing a press conference, he said results were like a shot in the arm for Congress workers who would now work with double the enthusiasm in Andhra Pradesh also. Mr. Vishnu said that an analysis of the election results showed clearly that the people had no confidence in regional parties and the welfare and developmental schemes initiated by the Congress had made the party popular both in rural and urban areas. The waiver of loans to farmers and the rural employment assurance scheme had a tremendous impact.Mr. Vishnu brushed off as ridiculous the claims made by Praja Rajyam Party leader Allu Arvind that the State Government had focused on the plight of the weavers, hiked pension to the physically challenged and put the development of coastal corridor on backburner only because of their campaign. The former UDA Chairman said going to the rescue of the weavers and hiking the pension for the disabled was in the party’s election manifesto even before the new party was even formed. He said the PRP leaders were trying to confuse the public by making tall claims, such as that it would win all 294 Assembly seats in the State.
