Pavements coming up along two busy roads

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation has begun works to lay pavements for pedestrians along the busy Huzur Road that falls in the South Zone of the city.

Inspected

South Zone Chairman P. Pynthamil, who inspected the works along with officials on Monday, said the pavements were a long-felt need as pedestrians ran the risk of getting hit by vehicles on a very busy stretch in the city.

For long, pavements could hardly be distinguished from the road, what with vehicles parked on it.

With the road in front of the Indian Red Cross Society building, a popular spot for demonstrations by political parties and other organisations, protestors and vehicles left very little space for pedestrians.

Vehicles of the members of the protesting parties occupied the footpath along the Jawan’s Bhavan, up to the Young Women’s Christian Association Hostel.

“This time, we are laying the pavement at more than a foot above the road level and this will ensure that the pavements are only for pedestrians,” Mr. Pari said.

The one-km pavement was almost circular. It was being laid around the South Taluk Office and the Red Cross building at Rs.45 lakh.

Pace

“Almost 60 per cent of the works are over. The pace slackened a bit earlier because of the rise in the price of construction materials. Now, it is progressing well,” he said.

Amount earmarked

The Chairman said that the other heavy traffic stretch to have better pavements was the Bank Road along which the railway station was located. The Corporation had earmarked Rs. 25 lakh for this road.
