Lakhs witness car festival in Tiruvannamalai

Packed: Devotees witnessing the car festival of Lord Arunachaleswarar in Tiruvannamalai on Monday.
Tiruvannamalai: Around one lakh devotees braved intermittent rains to participate in the car festival at Tiruvannamalai on Monday.
Wooden cars of Lord Vinayakar and Murugan were taken out in a procession around Mada Streets in the morning. Beautifully decorated car of presiding deity,Sri Arunachaleswarar, popularly called as ‘Periya Ther’, started its procession at 2.45 p.m. with District Collector M.Rajendran, SP V.Balamurugan, V.Dhanusu chairman, board of trustees of the temple, Joint Director HR&CE M.Pugazhendiran, Municipal Chairman R.Sridharan and several other dignitaries pulling it. In view of the festival lot of parents came round the temple carrying their children in a cradle, dangling from a bunch of sugarcane. The ritual is one of the characteristics of the annual Tiruvannamalai car festival.
