Immediate crop inspection sought
Staff Reporter
THENI: A group of farmers with disease-affected cotton plants from Mottanuthu and Kanniappapillaipatti in Andipatti block thronged the Collectorate here on Monday, demanding immediate crop inspection by experts to protect the standing crops and suitable compensation for the damage, if any.
In a petition submitted to the District Revenue Officer U. Thasanathan at the grievances’ day meeting, farmers said that they had raised Bt cotton on 50 acres in their villages. They purchased 450 grams of seed for Rs.780 and spent huge amount to raise the crops.
But bacterial leaf spot disease hit the crops massively in both the villages. The leaves were dry and withered. They also showed the damaged crops to the DRO.
The district administration must send a team of agriculture experts and revenue officials to the village to assess the damage and find out recuperative measures to protect the standing crops. If cotton crops were damaged beyond recuperation, suitable compensation should be given, they demanded.
“We want compensation of at least Rs.10,000 per acre. We have invested heavily to raise the crop. Destruction of crop would incur huge loss to each and every farmer.”
The petitioners also appealed to the DRO to take immediate action in this connection.
Meanwhile, The DRO deputed a tahsildar to assess the situation and also directed agriculture officials to inspect the spots.
