Stalin distributes benefits

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin distributed Rs. 60 lakh in rehabilitation benefits to persons with disabilities on the occasion of the World Disability Day.

The assistance included hearing aids, dark glasses and white sticks, adapted bikes, wheelchairs, Braille watches, crutches, educational aid, prosthetic limbs, and grants for self-employment. A total of 986 beneficiaries received the assistance from Mr. Stalin. He listed the progressive schemes launched by the DMK government. Some of them were forerunners to the national laws and policies evolved for the welfare of persons with disabilities.

The Central government had recognised Tamil Nadu’s work in providing ID cards to persons with disabilities by conferring on it a certificate of appreciation, Mr. Stalin said.

He also gave away awards to individuals and institutions for exemplary service to persons with disabilities. Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan said 31 early intervention centres had been started in the districts, and they would benefit children with disabilities up to the age of 5. The idea was to start intervention early in order to limit the debility. Furthermore, the government was providing free bus passes to children and their escorts to help them access the services.

Though the designated World Disability Day proceedings had to be suspended following the death of former Prime Minister V.P. Singh, the re-scheduled function was held on Monday as grandly and with as much involvement of different segments of the disabled community. A cultural show was put up by children of special schools. Prizes were awarded to some of the best performers.

N.S.Palaniappan, Principal Secretary, Social Welfare Department, and State Commissioner for the Disabled Meenakshi Rajagopal spoke.
