Bangalore: The terror attacks on Mumbai have instilled “fear and anxiety” in the minds of the people who now anticipate similar attacks in Bangalore, “but we should rise above fear and ensure that religions do not divide us,” said Archbishop of Bangalore Bernard Moras.

“It is hatred among various religious groups that has created divisions and people take advantage of these divisions,” he told presspersons on Monday at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Karnataka Regional Organisation for Social Service (KROSS).

In his presidential address on the occasion, Dr. Moras said that empowering girls and women was the only way to pave the way for the country’s overall development. “Providing education to children is the surest way to empowering families of economically backward sections of society. And this in turn will empower the whole community,” he said.

A training module on “Good Governance”, brought out by KROSS and other organisations, was released at the event.

The module describes the use of the Right to Information Act and the Consumer Protection Act and emphasises the need for participation in local bodies to strengthen governance, said Rita Noronha of the School of Social Work, Mangalore.

“It is a matter of deep concern that Karnataka is identified as among the most corrupt States in India. Facilitating good governance is the key to controlling corruption,” she said.
