Staff Reporter

It is for second unit of Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Station

TIRUCHI: Union Minister for Power and Commerce Jairam Ramesh on Saturday flagged off the boiler drum from the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi, for the second unit of Indira Gandhi Super Thermal Power Station being set up by the Aravalli Power Company Private Limited (APCPL).

The BHEL, Tiruchi, is executing the Rs. 2,900 crore package of supply and installation of 3 x 500 MW units for the APCPL – a joint venture of National Thermal Power Corporation, the Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited, and the Delhi-based Indraprastha Power Generation Corporation Limited – at Jhajjar Super Thermal Power Project in Haryana.

Slated for synchronisation during the 11th Plan, the 36 million units that these units will add to the grid on commissioning will be shared by the power-deficit States of Delhi and Haryana. Notably, power from the first unit will also be used for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in 2010.

The Minister also flagged off the consignment for the order the BHEL, Tiruchi, had received from the Gujarat State Electric Generation Limited (GSEGL), Hazira, Surat.

The order, a deemed export contract won against stiff international competitive bidding, is for supply of a gas turbine and a steam turbine along with a FR9FA heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) for GSEGL’s 350 MW combined cycle power plant.

The BHEL, Tiruchi, will supply the HRSG and the BHEL, Hyderabad, the gas turbine and steam engine. The HRSG will generate steam from the waste gas of the gas turbine and source the same to the steam turbine to generate 135 MW power.

The consignment encompassed 327 modules each with a length of 22 metres, totally weighing 5,103 metric tonnes, according to a communication from BHEL, Tiruchi.

Another communication said that the Chairman of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) C.P. Singh flagged off the first consignment of boiler materials for the Board’s North Chennai 600 MW Thermal Power Station (TPS) Unit – 1.

The TNEB has ordered this first 600 MW power project under Stage II, under single Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) cum finance basis.

This is the first 600 MW project in India to be engineered based on the conventional technology developed by BHEL.

The project that commenced on February 18, 2008, with a commissioning schedule of 39 months, received against stiff international competitive bidding. Subsequently, TNEB placed orders in August 2008 for the second 600 MW unit meant for the same TPS.
