Unsung heroes

The most spectacular fight back to the Mumbai attacks was led by the Mumbai police - at the CST railway station and the D.B. Marg station. In the face of heavy firing from AK-47s, they valiantly fought back with their self-loading rifles, pistols and lathis.

And the policemen of D.B. Marg station captured a fidayeen alive. The nation should salute these men and the brave chopper pilots who dropped NSG commandos flying perilously close to, and between, high-rise buildings and the fearless firemen who rescued hundreds of people amid heavy firing.

K. Jayakkannan,
Coimbatore

That the Mumbai police took on the hardcore terrorists with lathis and pistols and captured one of them alive is amazing. This is the first time we have heard of a terrorist being taken alive anywhere in the world.

The policemen who risked their lives and kept their cool should be rewarded suitably. At the same time, let us seriously think of arming our policemen better.

T. Mohen Chander,
Coimbatore

Ordinary policemen like Tukaram Gopal Ombale, who was killed by Ajmal Amir Iman while trying to overpower him, and his lathiwielding colleagues should also receive due attention and compensation. But for Ombale, we would not have caught Iman alive.

Catching alive a fidayeen was no mean feat and it should be duly recognised by the nation.

Udita Agrawal,
New Delhi

The news that needs to be given prominence is the decision by Muslims that they will not allow the terrorists killed by the security forces to be buried in Muslim graveyards.

Their stand will go a long way in unifying us as Indians. Their message that perpetrators of terror will be left to rot after death will, I am sure, make every present and future terrorist think about his act.

V. Muralidharan,
Chennai
