Corrections and clarifications

  • The seventh paragraph of an article “From accounts to accountability” (Op-Ed, December 6, 2008) was “A social audit of 17 NREGA works in five Gram Panchayats of Karon Block in Deoghar District (Jhardhan), conducted on 12-16 October 2008, unearthed some alarming facts related to bank payments ….” It should have been Deoghar District (Jharkhand).

  • A report “Sino-Indian exercises today” (December 6, 2008) said that the [Sino-Indian Joint Military Training and] Exercise [“Ex Hand-in-Hand 2008”] follows significant political engagement between the two countries started by the “watershed” visit of the former Prime Minister, late Rajiv Gandhi, to China in 1998. At the invitation of Premier Li Peng, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi paid an official visit to China between December 19-23, 1988, the first visit to China by an Indian Prime Minister in 34 years,

  • The first two paragraphs in a report “Police to seek custody of Kuber’s owner” (December 6, 2008) were respectively: “The Mumbai police will seek the custody of trawler Kuber’s owner Vinod Masani, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria, said here [Mumbai] on Friday.

“Mr. Masani arrived in Mumbai on Thursday morning for questioning. The ten terrorists who carried out the terror attacks in Mumbai had hijacked the Kuber in the high seas after it left from Porbunder in Gujarat.”

This was the mistake. The Staff Reporter clarifies that it should have read: “The Mumbai police will seek the custody of LeT operative Faheem Ansari, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria, said here on Friday. Ansari was in the custody of the UP police.

“Meanwhile, Vinod Masani, Kuber’s owner, is being questioned.”

  • The caption of the accompanying Reuters photograph in a feature “Sixty Hours of Terror — Why Mumbai?” (The Hindu-Magazine, December 7, 2008, page 1) was “Senseless Violence: Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus [Mumbai] on the night of October 26.” It was an editing error and should have been November 26.

  • A sentence in the last paragraph of a report “Italian footwear labs in India” (Early editions, December 6, 2008) was “… But, India’s exports were to the tune of 886 million Euros whereas the value of exports made by Italy was 68 billion Euros.” Mr. M. Viswanathan, Cluster Development Agent (Leather & Footwear), UNIDO Consolidated Project for SME Development in India, clarifies that the value of exports made by Italy is 6,880 million euros, i.e. 6.9 billion, and not 68 billion.

  • A sentence in a report “Rs.1,000 announced as flood relief” (Tamil Nadu, December 3, 2008) was “Flood waters have affected standing crops on 7.72 hectares.” It should have been 7.72 lakh hectares.

  • A chess report (as published in the Bangalore edition) “Bharathi, Aditya win” (“Sport”, December 5, 2008) said R. Bharathi of Tamil Nadu and Aditya Udeshi of Maharashtra won the boys and girls’ titles respectively in the National sub-junior chess championship that concluded in Mangalore recently. It should have been R. Bharathi and Aditya Udeshi won the girls and boys’ titles respectively!
