This Day That Age
The world’s largest ship, 1,04,500 deadweight tons tanker, was launched on December 6 at the National Bulk Carriers Shipyard at Kure, Japan. The mammoth tanker’s keel was laid last June and the ship will be completed next January. The ship is named “Universe Apollo”, and is the first tanker to exceed one lakh tons. Because of its huge size, the normal launching procedure of slipping down the slipway could not be adopted. Instead, the building dock where the ship was built was filled with enough water to float the hull and was then towed towards the sea and manoeuvred into the fitting dock. The tanker is being built at a cost of Rs. 70 crores.
