TIRUCHI: For a group of 13 women cured of their mental disability, the vocational training on manufacture of sanitary napkins they underwent has opened up a ray of hope for rehabilitation.

The three-day training imparted through a joint effort of the Centre for Women’s Studies of Bharathidasan University; Women Entrepreneurs Association of Tamil Nadu and Trust Society, a voluntary organisation, equipped them with the capacity to earn regular income.

The path to rehabilitation would infuse self-confidence among the women, the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasn University, M. Ponnavaikko, said handing over certificates to the trainees. People with mental disability look for empathy and not sympathy, he observed.

Managing Secretary of the Trust K. Ramakrishnan spoke on the efficacy of early clinical treatment for curing mental disability and said the women have been trained in handle sewing machines and iron-box for manufacturing the sanitary napkins.

The trust had in the past rehabilitated mentally-disabled persons after a curative therapy into manufacturing areca nut plates and phenyl.

The Chairman of Chidambaram Pillai College for Women, A. Loganathan, gave away free medicines to the cured women.

The District Disabled Rehabilitation Officer, R. Shyamala; the Director of Centre for Women’s Studies N. Manimekalai and the vice-president of Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, N. Kanagasabapathy were among those who spoke.
