The operations will start in the Maldare area near Siddapura in Virajpet division Six elephants from Hunsur are camping at the Dubare elephant camp to assist in the operations
Elephants at the Dubare camp in Kodagu. Bangalore: With an aim at addressing the intensifying human-elephant conflict, the Forest Department will translocate six elephants from Kodagu district on Wednesday. The elephants will be tranquillised and kept in a kraal for a few days of observation, after which a decision will be taken about which forest they will be transferred to, said Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) I.B. Srivastava. Mr. Srivastava had issued three orders giving permission to identify and capture the elephants. The first order was issued on July 27, 2007, the second on August 8 and the third on November 24, 2008. It will not be an easy operation, he admitted. He, however, added that “because of the increase in elephant population, diminishing habitat and disruption of their migratory corridors there has been an intensifying of human-elephant conflict in the area.” The translocation will ease the elephant population burden in this area, Mr. Srivastava said. The operations would start in the Maldare area, near Siddapura, in the Virajpet division of the district, according to Conservator of Forests G.A. Sudarshan. Two persons were killed in elephant attacks in Maldare recently and residents of the area had requested the Forest Department to capture the “rogue” elephants that were destroying crops and taking human lives. The operations will most likely end at Shanivarasante in the Madikeri division, he added. Two veterinarians from the Hunsur wildlife division have gone there to make preparations. Six elephants from Hunsur are camping at the Dubare elephant camp to assist in the operations. Medicines, drugs, darts, rope and other material needed for the operation had been mobilised. Mr. Sudarshan said that catching these elephants would mitigate the problems there to an extent. This is the second time that such a large translocation operation is being conducted in the State. Last year six elephants were translocated in Hassan district.
