NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Water Resources Saifuddin Soz on Wednesday assured Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy of Central government’s “technical support and other assistance” in the implementation of various water projects. Mr. Saifuddin Soz gave this assurance to the Chief Minister when he called on him at his office here on Wednesday, according to an official press note. Among the issues discussed were the Andhra Pradesh government’s stand-off with Maharashtra on the Babli barrage and the State government’s request to declare Pranahita and Polavaram as national river projects. Dr. Reddy urged the Minister to raise Andhra Pradesh’s share of grant under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme. AIBP guidelinesMr. Soz informed the Chief Minister that the AIBP guidelines had been finalised by a Group of Ministers and approved by the Union Cabinet. Identified States were already receiving 90 per cent grant for drought-prone and tribal areas under AIBP. Andhra Pradesh was covered under the Prime Minister’s Farmers Rehabilitation Package as well.
