CHENNAI: The Chennai police have written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seeking necessary action against cricketer Zaheer Khan for his “high-handed” behaviour with the police at Taj Coromandel Hotel here on Tuesday. A senior police official said that Police Commissioner K. Radhakrishnan had written to the BCCI Secretary N. Srinivasan about the “misbehaviour” of the player with Deputy Commissioner of Police M. Pandian, who was designated as the ‘Camp Commandant’ and deputed exclusively for the security of Indian and England players at the hotel. On Tuesday, Thiru Kumaran, a former cricket player, had come to see Mr. Zaheer Khan when he was stopped by security personnel at the lobby. The visitor informed Mr. Zaheer Khan over mobile phone that the police had prevented his entry following which the latter came down. Even as the police were trying to explain that the name of Mr. Thiru Kumaran did not figure in the list of guests/visitors expected for the day, Mr. Zaheer Khan “shouted” at the DCP and other police officials in the lobby that they had no authority to stop his friend from seeing him. “He took him to the fifth floor which is a restricted zone as all the players were accommodated there. Though police tried to conduct mandatory frisking of the visitor, Mr. Zaheer Khan took him away to his room,” the official said. A three-tier security check is being done at the hotel where all visitors are frisked and their baggage is thoroughly checked. “This is not expected of a senior player like him in the current security scenario. The security checks are only in the interest and safety of the players. We have already communicated to the Security Managers of both the teams about the measures taken by the police,” the official said. After making an entry in the local police station records, Mr. Pandian submitted a report to the Commissioner of Police on the happenings. It was based on this report, the issue was taken up with the BCCI, the sources added.
