Bangalore: Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) Chairperson S.R. Nayak has lashed out at the State Government for its “lack of commitment” towards providing adequate staff and infrastructure to ensure the commission’s smooth functioning, despite repeated requests. Speaking at the International Human Rights Day celebration here on Wednesday, he said that the Government had failed to consult the commission before posting high-ranking officers, though this was the norm followed in all commissions. He regretted that the demands of the commission for providing more personnel and bigger space was “of least importance in the list of priorities of the Government”, though it “ought to have received prompt and top-most consideration”. He added that the commission was “tired of telling the government and writing to them repeatedly” on this. “The commission requires infrastructure facilities of a university,” he said. Mr. Nayak said that officers were being posted without adhering to the norm of sending a list of probables to the commission prior to posting. Officers were being sent in and out of the commission for short periods of time, without giving them time to settle down and understand the human rights perspective, he added. Mr. Nayak said that despite the lack of facilities, the KSHRC had been doing well in “relative assessment” compared with other State commissions.
