“Green IT, a short-term energy saving option”

CHENNAI: In an economic scenario where cost cutting tops the to-do list of organisations, green technology that could result in energy savings would be popular, says Rakesh Kumar, vice-president at Gartner Research, who specialises in large-scale enterprise computing strategies. ‘Green IT’ will be viewed with a focus on short-term energy saving options rather than looking at a long-term technology story that will benefit the environment, he says. “CIOs are saying, ‘Let’s talk payback,’” he adds.

K. Ananth Krishnan, Chief Technology Officer, TCS, concurs, “Greening IT processes helps reduce the energy spend, inefficiencies and wastages. In this sense, greening is a cost saver and a positive measure for adoption in a slowdown, wherever there is potential for plugging price leakages, generating efficiencies and trimming the total spend. Thus eco-friendly procurement programmes that are energy and cost efficient are likely to be promoted even in the short-term as they make social and business sense,” he says.

Going green not only helps costs, but also helps the organisations’ image. “You save money and look good,” says Mr. Kumar. Some companies have adopted the green mantra as a part of every transaction that they do.

Phaneesh Murthy, CEO, iGATE, says, “While the economic slowdown may impact our total investment, whatever we spend will continue to be in a green-friendly manner. Reducing the carbon footprint is our social responsibility. We take this issue seriously enough to be measuring it and reporting it to the public and our shareholders.”
