Corrections and Clarifications

  • A report “India fears repeat of ‘revolving door’ crackdown” (December 10, 2008) said that Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar was released by the Indian government in 2000 following the hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight to Kandahar. He was released in 1999 (December 31) as part of a negotiated deal with the hijackers, as mentioned in the page 1 report “Restrictions put on Masood Azhar” (December 10, 2008).

  • The last sentence in a report “Trading in corporate bonds on exchanges shortly” (“Business” page, December 9, 2008) was “In this regard, he noted that IIFCL would seek approval from the Central Board of Direct Taxes for issuance of bonds to the extent of Rs. 10,000 crore.” These are tax-free bonds.

  • In “Corrections and Clarifications” (December 10, 2008) and with reference to a report “Rane supporter in [Maharashtra] cabinet, we had said that the figure “24 Cabinet Ministers” given in the last paragraph should have been 26 cabinet ministers, as mentioned earlier in the report. The Mumbai Bureau clarifies that the figure “24 Cabinet Ministers” was excluding the Chief Minister and the Deputy CM.

  • In the scorecard of the C.K. Nayudu under-22 cricket tournament, “Bengal in semifinals” (“Sport”, December 9, 2008), the first innings score of Assam against Punjab was inadvertently left out. The scorecard should have read Punjab 342 in 110.1 overs (Gurkreet Singh 93, Gaurav Gambhir 91, Prasanta Sonuwal four for 97, Pankaj Saikia three for 95) and 471 for three in 121 overs (Farul Kanwar 171, Taruwar Kohli 168 batting) vs Assam 129.
