CBI probe ordered into student’s death

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday ordered an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the suspicious death of Shayam Lal Mandal, a final year student of the Thiruvananthapuram Engineering College in 2005.

Justice R. Basant was hearing a petition filed by the victim’s father Vasudev Mandal, who sought a CBI inquiry .

The student, hailing from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was kidnapped from his hostel and murdered for ransom in Thiruvananthapuram between October 12 and 23, 2005.

Police conducted investigations and two of the three accused were arrested. All the three were residents of the Andaman islands. Since there was no progress in the investigation, Crime Branch took over the probe. Mr. Mandal approached the court seeking a direction for a CBI inquiry. — PTI
