This Day That Age
The significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was underlined by the presiding officers of both Houses of Parliament on December 10 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the signing of the declaration. In the Rajya Sabha, the Chairman, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, described the declaration as an “act of faith” and said that observance and implementation of the principles contained in the declaration was essential for securing peace in the world. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Mr. Anantasayanam Iyengar, said that if this historic declaration was adopted by all countries, many of the troubles facing the world would fade away. Unfortunately, even after ten years, he said, the declaration had not been given full effect to in some countries while in others the principles underlying it had not been adopted. “It is right and proper that we should give thought to this great declaration on this occasion and solemnly resolve to act up to it”, the Speaker added.
