TIRUCHI: Carving the images of national leaders, noted poets and political philosophers at the tip of a pencil has been his hobby for the past five years.

Devaraj Albert (30) of Thanjavur just takes about half an hour to carve out the image of a leader at the tip of a pencil.

“I am good at drawing and just extended this skill to carve out the images of leaders,” he said. He carefully peels off a pencil, culling out the nose and mouth of a leader. Adequate attention is paid with regard to turban and other dress materials associated with a leader.

He has so far carved out 200 images of leaders, including the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhiji, former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. On Wednesday, he carved out the image of Subramania Bharathiar. “His birth anniversary falls on Thursday,” he says as a mark of tribute to the national poet.
