Armed man’s bid to rob woman aborted

Special Correspondent

He tried to enter house in guise of company representative

When the woman raised an alarm and neighbours rushed to help, the man fled and got into a waiting taxi that sped away

TAMBARAM: A 25-year-old woman in Adambakkam thwarted an attempt by a knife-wielding man to rob her on Monday.

The Adambakkam police said Anuradha, wife of a carpenter, was alone in her house in AG’s Colony when a well- dressed youth introduced himself as a representative of a private company and knocked at her door on the pretext of asking for directions to a house in the locality.

The woman, however, did not open the door and turned him away, saying she did not know where the house was.

She went inside her house and stepped out about 15 minutes later, to dry clothes when she noticed the man still standing there.

Alarmed, the woman tried to get back into her house when the man followed her.

He then placed a knife at her throat and threatened her with dire consequences if she did not part with her jewellery.

However, the woman resisted and called out for help.

Listening to her cries, neighbours rushed to Anuradha’s help.

Noticing a big group approaching the house, the man fled from the spot and got into a waiting car, reported to be a private taxi that sped away.

The neighbours tried to follow the car, but in vain.

The woman escaped unhurt and was not relieved of her jewellery, police said, adding that teams were searching for the suspect.

One of them noted down the registration number of the car, but on verification with the Transport Department it was found that the number belonged to a motorcycle.
