HYDERABAD: The proposed strike by the RTC employees on December 11 and 12 has been dropped following an agreement between National Mazdoor Union (NMU) and the management late on Wednesday night, according to indications available here. The agreement was reached after the management held marathon talks with NMU leaders on resolving the main demand for withdrawal of the move to introduce 1,500 Setwin buses. However, the Joint Action Committee comprising five other unions which did not participate in the talks, has announced its decision to go on an indefinite strike from December 22. At a press conference, the JAC leaders representing Employees Union, Staff and Workers Federation, Karmika Sangh, Karmika Parishat and Staff and Workers Union, said that they unanimously decided to go an indefinite strike as there was no favourable response, either from the management or the government to their strike notice given a month ago, listing out 48 demands. JAC’s convener K. Padmakar and co-convener R. Lakshmaiah, said there was no clear-cut assurance from Transport Minister K. Laxminarayana on withdrawal of the proposal to introduce Setwin buses, although he had promised to resolve the issue upon his return from foreign tour. Also there was no favourable response on the demand to regularise the services of 14,000 contract workers. Both the management and RTC were trying to weaken the corporation, they charged. Also there was no forward movement on phased withdrawal of hired buses. Other demandsThe other demands include providing financial assistance to RTC for buying new buses to meet the growing demand, jobs to the wards of employees, who had died, under ‘breadwinner scheme’, putting an end to giving RTC assets to private people under Build, Operate and Transfer scheme, abolition of outsourcing policy and immediate payment of arrears by the Government to RTC.
