LONDON: Leading U.K.-based Indian industrialist, Swraj Paul, has become the first Asian Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords. Describing it as an “honour,” he told The Hindu he was “delighted.” “It is a vote of confidence,” he said, pointing out that a Deputy Speaker is chosen with the consent of all parties and so it showed all sides of the House had confidence in him. Lord Paul, who was made a Peer in 1996, said his election showed the British democratic system rewarded hard work. “It speaks a great deal about British and the British system of democracy and is also a tribute to the country of my origin,” he said.
