DHAKA: Bangladesh’s military-backed caretaker government has decided to lift the Emergency on December 17. The government will also lift the restrictions on meetings and rallies by political parties on Friday. This has been done to facilitate conduct election campaigns, said Commerce and Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman on Wednesday. The announcement came a day before the last date of withdrawal of candidature for the December 29 Parliament elections. All major political parties have been demanding the lifting of the Emergency before the elections. Mr. Rahman, however, said the parties would have to follow the Code of Conduct set by the Election Commission. Meanwhile, Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina began her election campaign on Thursday.BNP chief Khaleda Zia will begin her campaign on Friday.
