KOCHI: The much-awaited power paragliding event by world champion Mathieu Rouanet unfurled at the Volvo Ocean Race Village here on Thursday evening, before hundreds of spectators.

With the race generating tremendous interest from water sport lovers in this part of the globe, many people came accompanied by their children, despite Christmas examinations being round the corner, to witness the paragliding and snake boat race which were held one after the other.

In the snake boat race held at the Mattancherry Channel, Puma Sreeganesh chundan of Tiruvarpu Boat Club captained by James Kutty won the first place, followed by Telefonica Payippad chundan of the Alappuzha Town Boat Club led by Saibu K. John. The vessel Delta Lloyd Cheruthana led by M.N. Rameshan came third. Each of the snake boats is named after the Volvo fleet teams, followed by the original name of the boat. It was organised by Kerala Tourism. Foreigners see snake boat racing as something of a cult, just as bull fighting is in Spain and they cheered loudly as the race picked up momentum.

The evening also saw prizes being given to the winners of Leg 2 (Cape Town-Kochi) of the ocean race. Cultural programmes followed.

On Friday morning, there will be a business meet at the race village. An ensemble of folk arts from Kerala will be presented in the evening.

On Saturday, a sky diving and air display by the Southern Air Command will be held at 10 a.m. The Kochi-Kavaratti offshore race will be flagged off at 11 a.m., followed by blessing of the ocean race fleet, which will embark on its journey to Singapore.
