Crackdown against rowdy elements will continue: SP

Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI: A sustained crackdown against rowdy elements over the past 12 months has helped the Tiruchi Rural Police to curb rowdyism in its limits, A. Kaliyamurthy, Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi, said here on Thursday.

About 60 rowdy elements have been detained under the Goondas Act since January this year. Last year, six rowdy elements had been booked under the Act.

This apart, 2,754 persons were taken into custody under Sections 106,109 and 110 of the Criminal Procedure Code this year.

They were produced before Executive Magistrates and kept on surveillance on giving undertakings for good conduct, he told reporters. The police would continue to maintain pressure on rowdy elements, he added.

As many as 117 peace meetings were held across the district in coordination with the Revenue Department to defuse tension between different communities. This has helped avert communal clashes and maintaining peace.

Of the 48 murder cases booked in the district during 2008, 46 cases have been cracked and the accused have been arrested.

Chargesheets have been filed in all these cases and the accused have been convicted with life sentence in four cases. There was no involvement of any hirelings in any of the murder cases and motives behind the murders were mostly family/ property dispute or sexual jealousy.

A Sri Lankan refugee, Sasi alias Sasikumar (24), who was involved in the murder of another refugee Dhavakumar (24) at the Vazhavanathankottai Sri Lankan refugee camp was arrested this week. Sasi had come back to the city from Rameswaram with the intent of murdering another refugee in the camp.

The recent crackdown against the notorious robbers of Gandhi Nagar and Ramji Nagar and the arrest of 71 criminals involved in cases across the country has effectively curbed their operations.

During the year, 302 cases of robbery, theft and waylaying were reported and 296 cases were cracked, making a detection rate of 96 per cent. Stolen property worth Rs.90.43 lakh have been recovered, with a recovery rate of 97 per cent, which was the highest in the eight delta districts in the region.

On the prohibition front, over 4,727 cases were booked and 23 repeat offenders were booked under the Bootleggers Act this year.

Highway patrol teams have transported as many as 1852 persons injured in various accidents on highways to hospitals. Over 1,300 drivers have been booked for drunken driving and licences of 81 of these have been cancelled. The permits of nine vehicles have been revoked, Mr. Kaliyamurthy said.
