NEW DELHI: Advocating a unified national response in the war against terror, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the November 26 attacks in Mumbai was on the unity of the nation. “They attacked the idea of this country, an idea [that] we are all united in fighting terrorism. Our enemies view us as one and we have to act as one,” he said, taking part in the debate in the Lok Sabha. In Mr. Gandhi’s view, the real outrage for the people was that collectively the country had stopped valuing the life of individual citizens and only bothered about VIPs or those with “lal batti” (revolving red lights atop VIP cars). “We have to change how we view the lives of individual Indians and we have to decide that not a single life will go in vain,” he said. “People who were behind the attacks like the one in Mumbai should [be made] to understand that not only the country valued the lives of its individuals but there will be a cost in killing innocent Indians. India will not stand people coming into the country and killing our innocents.” The Amethi MP also suggested that politicians should desist from interfering in police functioning like transfers and promotions, and stop indulging in divisive politics.
