3 detained for bid to plant bombs

Manas Dasgupta

AHMEDABAD: Three persons have been detained in Vadodara for allegedly planning the planting of bombs in the “Banyan city,” the police said.

The arrests were made on the basis of revelations by one of the accused in the July 26 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts case, Qyamuddin Kapadia. Basically a resident of Vadodara, Qyamuddin was wanted in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts. He was picked up by the Madhya Pradesh police last week and was brought to Ahmedabad for interrogation.

The police sources indicated that the terrorists had planned simultaneous bombing of Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara. While 57 people were killed and over 100 injured in 18 serial blasts in Ahmedabad, the bombs failed to explode in Surat apparently due to a malfunctioning power device. The Vadodara plan had to be abandoned due to lack of adequate manpower.

Qyamuddin named Umar Mansuri, Rafiq and Asif as his accomplices in the plan in Vadodara city. Mansuri was given the charge of recruiting people for planting the bombs, but he could not get adequate support and the plan fizzled out.
